Urmila...Urmila...

Well, indha thadavai I am in a thoughtful (correct correct, naana, think-anu neenga yosikareenga, but well, poonaikum pul thadukkum illaya) moodla iruken, adhanala light-a oru serious topic - but the real intention is to get answers.

Two weeks ago, I was watching this tamil programme "chinna thirai fashion show" or something, adhula the actresses were asked to exhibit their talents (TV-la azha vaikaradhu thani talent, adhai thavira..) and one of them enacted Lakshmana's wife Urmila's emotions, in an angle most of us might not have thought about. Adhavadhu chinna vayasula eppadi Sita-ke ella chellamum kidaichadhu, and eppadi Sita Rama-vai pannitadhanala her sisters got to (or had to) marry his brothers, and how Lakshmana had left her behind when he accompanied Rama to the forest for 14 years et al.

What she said makes sense - kalyanamana pudhusula 1 month pirinjale, inga avan aval mandai kayaranga, and it is quite common with these IT onsite projects. Kalyanamana 1st day-ve, oruthi kitta poi, naan en annathai-oda kattuku poren, nee ingaye irundhu enga atha-va 14 varushathuku parthuko-na how irritating would that be? Moreover, Sita got to stay with her husband justifying her role as his wife and the norm that a wife has to stay with the husband serving him, but Urmila wasnt allowed the same privilege. Enda rasa, naan unnai kalyanam pannita paavathuku 14 varushathuku thandanai anubavikanuma-nu dhane thonum? This is what started this thread, Urmila-va en yaarume kandukkala? The other wives got to stay with their husbands, Urmila was the only one who did not, rather could not.

So konjam ramayana-va browse pannen, what exactly did Urmila do when this happened? Lakshmana sedhi solla ponaram Urmila kitta, and she was painting the coronation picture of Rama (ada, madam-ku painting theriyuma?!). Ivar thideernu "Urmila!"-nu konjam kathi koopta udane tension aagi the painting was spoilt (sentiment!). After Lakshmana tells her the bad news and about his decision, Urmila simply said that she is happy about his decision, and that was his duty to serve the Lord. Konjam yosichu partha, this must have taken an inordinate amount of self-control to handle this situation. Their divine natures apart, it is quite natural for any female to grieve in this kind of situation, which she seems to have effectively handled.

Podhakuraiku, Lakshmana also told her to eat and sleep for him while he gaurds his brother and sis-in-law, coz he wont have time to sleep or eat in his duty. Ivangalum saptu thoongiye 14 years kazhichangalam (oru velai andha kalathula diet consciousness irundhirukadho?), much to the consternation of others in the palace. So purushan illadhadhu pathadhunu, she earned a bad name too.

Nadula, namma thalaivar pannina warla Lakshmana was injured badly, right? Hanuman, while carrying the Sanjeevi hill, was injured by Bharata while crossing Ayodhya (air surveillance-ama). Keezha vizhundha Hanuman told Bharata and others about Lakshmana's plight. Ellarume sogamayittanga, except Urmila. Illa illa, "venumda unaku"-nra ennam ellam kidayadhu, she just expressed her faith in the fact that nothing would happen to Lakshmana when he is with Rama, the Paramatma (akramam!! Sanjeevi malai thooki adi pattu vizhundhirukardhu Hanumar, partha Ramar kapathuvar-ntanga!) Again, evalo kashtama irundhirukum, husband is injured, yet she cant be beside him and attend to him inspite of knowing the situation - pathetic situation indeed.

Idhellam kooda ok, 14 years kazhichu thirumba vandhanga motha perum. Lakshmana had one handful of rice, and regained his energy, but surprisingly had to sleep for the next 14 years to make up for all the lost sleep. Oru pondatti 28 varusham "kathirundhu kathirundhu kalangal ponadhada"-nu paditta iruka mudiyum? But Urmila had to, thanks to the political situation in her in-law's place.

Ramayana talks only about Rama, but there are folks who have sacrificed a lot for Rama's sake, yet have not been given the right credit they deserve. From a lady's perspective, what Urmila did was a remarkable sacrifice - letting her husband go with his brother, to serve him for 14 long years - which is unparalleled by any other female, even Sita, in Ramayana. Even Lakshmana is given some credit for what he did, but Urmila? But understandable dhan, Rajini padathula Shriya-ke limelight kammi, Nayantara-ku mattum attention koduthuduvoma? ;)

BTW, indha post pic was the cynical comment from my kuttisathan, kandukadheenga!

To be frank, i didnt ever thought abt this character, Urmila.
As u correctly stated, focus is only on the hero and not on the ppl who made the hero rama..
Though Lakshmana can state as sacrifice, he is not fit to get married and leaving wife like that..
It can never be compared to our current life situation.. Nobody can be like her..
Thanks for throwing light by discussing a good topic, instead of fun topic.. Keep posting.

i think urmila was 11 when she married Lakshmana. So she didn't miss out much in the 14 yrs. she was ripe when Lakshmana returned. On the other hand, Sita's plight was much more. She went to the forest, but the husband's bro was always around. Then she was abducted. Then she came back only to be sent away again. She had to raise the twins by herself in an Ashram. Don't even compare :-)

There are many characters in ramayana not described as much as the characters that form the core of the epic. There is another predominant point worth mentioning here is, if at all there could be some information still evolving in books/texts/portals about some not so-popular characters, they should have also come only from the main source that describes the other popular characters. If Ramayan is just a story to describe the heroic attributes of Rama then your analogy about Rajini's would be appropriate. A 'subtle' difference between Purana and Itihaas prevails !!!!
