Columbus Columbus vittachu leavuuu!!! - II

This time, it is the Rosslyn Chapel that became famous after Dan Brown's "The Da Vinci Code". This is considered a mysterious church with too many secrets in it, and church full-a carvings avalo azhaga irukum. I have taken only pics that dont appear in any other site, coz Apperentice & Mason pillars ellam net-laye kidaikum. Dan Brown-oda kadhai & its link to this chapel pathi end-la solren.

This is how the chapel looks now, actual chapel neenga net-la parkalam. This has been done to protect the chapel from further damage..so mudhal-la parkumpodhu naama nijamave chapel-ku vandhirukoma-nu thonudhu. Indha chapel was earlier damaged due to Protestant mobs when catholic churches/altars were demolished.

This is the burial stone of Sir William St Clair, an ancestor of the founder of Rosslyn Church, it says Willaim St Clair of Knights Templar. Knights Templar was founded for the protection of pilgrims, aana the actual intention was to find treasures in the Solomon temple and to protect a secret. This church was founded in 1446, and it apparently took 40 years for completion. History says indha building kattinadhe Knights templar dissolve aanapuram-dhan-tu. William III, the founder of Rosslyn, was the first head of the Scots' secret society similar to Knights Templar. Kudumbame marma kudumbam poliruku!!

This is the roof of the chapel - it is divided into 5 sections: daisies, lilies, roses, forget me nots and stars... Inga concept enna-na not even a single cm has been left without carving. Indha building was a tribute to Christianity by William, and he made sure that all carvings came as per his specifications and took extreme care of the construction phase. The carvings in the chapel are based on his vision.

Indha carving shows the 7 different sins that could be committed by humankind. I have marked the individual carvings with a white dot and explained each image..idhe madhiri on the other side, there is a carving that depicts the 7 virtues that humankind can do. Naama sins dhane jaasthi panrom, adhanala idhai eduthutten ;) One interesting thing is that charity is a virtue, aana sin-la thooki pottutanga..and avarice is a sin that was put into virtues! Confucius concept?
1. Pride - Puffing out his chest
2. Gluttony - drinking from the pitcher
3. Charity - Transposed with greed
4. Anger - holding an axe and a club
5. Envy - crossing his arms, surrounded by a bunch of grapes
6. Sloth - dragging a bag along the ground
7. Lust - lovers embracing

Indha angel oru heart madhiri onnu hold pannudhillaya, that is the heart of Robert Bruce, King of Scotland. Ivar namma Shakespeare-oda Macbeth's descendant, and indha heart-a William St Clair 1330-la eduthuttu varumpodhudhan sethu ponaram, and this is the William whose tombstone figures above. Indha angel supposedly depicts the intimacy between St Clair and Robert the Bruce and pays a tribute to Robert. Kutti vayasula Robert and the spider kadhai ketrupeengale, the one that has the moral "Try and try till you succeed", adhu indha king kadhaidhan.

This is the one of the carvings found in the outer wall of the chapel. Super-a illa? Idhoda carvingkaga indha snap eduthen, and I ain't sure if those figures are anyone in history :)

Now, over to Dan Brown. He has said that there is a 6 pointed star(chalice-spade combo) on the ground that is right above a secret vault. Indha chapel-la six pointed star-e kidayadhu. Either you have 5 pointed stars or a 8 pointed star. And the vaults only hold the remains of the St Clair family. Aana onnu, this chapel is believed to contain some secret, and prospects are mummified head of Jesus, Templars' treasures, scrolls from the Temple of Solomon...appadi ippadintu solranga. Moreover, Dan has also said that Roslin (rosslyn) indicates the bloodline of Jesus, adhellam onnum kidayadhu. Roslin => Ross: hill and Lynn: waterfall.

Things you could search for to get a good view into Rosslyn chapel - Green man (103 carvings inside the chapel), Apperentice Pillar (exquisitely carved and has a history), Knights Templar and Star of David.

The next post would be scotland's lakes and mountains...

Hey Usha,
Nice again.
Did you feel the goose bumps? I felt them when I visited the Louvre. The excitement of seeing something you have read in the books is invaluable.
